Sun
As well as the usual summer mountain pursuits of walking, running and cycling, the Ariege offers you the opportunity to try something new. For example from here you can visit the Lombrives Cave which is the largest cave in the European Union or why not pay a visit to Montsegur Castle which is situated at 1,207m, this symbol of Cathar resistance dominates the surrounding valleys. You could also visit the Devil’s Bridge (we will tell you the legends later!) or travel the stony, winding 5km road up to the spectacular Frau Gorge. If you are interested in birds of prey or wolves there are birds of prey to be found at Lordat Castle and the Wolf House in Orlu…and much, much more…but if you want to relax and ponder life’s great mysteries then just visit the spa in Ax-les-Thermes.
Walking
The Pyrenees is a range of mountains running along the border between Spain and France, in Europe. They are approximately 600 km long. The Areige Pyrenees is a great place for walkers of any ability. We have a great number of stunning walks to offer you, we can provide you with a prepared packed lunch for that full day out (for 5 euros that is).
Running
We can advise you of the many routes from the house and in the surrounding mountains and forests. Special training weeks can be arranged. There are races most weekends, on the road and mountain trails and for the adventurous there are snowshoe events in the winter.
Cycling
It is in the Pyrenees that the Tour de France is often won or lost but you don’t have to match the professionals for speed and endurance to enjoy cycling through this wonderful landscape. From a leisurely family outing to a heart-stopping mountain bike descent’ the Pyrenees provides the perfect backdrop. The Cols around Perles make for some testing days out. For mountain bikers the Vallees d’Ax mountain bike site includes 135km of signposted routes.
If you fancy a point to point walk, run or ride we will be happy to drop you off or pick you up.
